Scale up bootcamp

10 October 2019, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
INSEAD Middle East Campus

A small town family-run discount store in Rogers (Arkansas, USA) called Waltons scaled to become Walmart. At US$500 billion in 2018, Walmart is the world’s largest company by revenue and the world’s largest employer with 2.2 million workforce across 11,368 stores in 27 countries operating under 55 different names. Walmart has achieved scale.

The word Scale (the noun) means many things. In the business world, one definition is to evolve from the ability to serve one to the ability to serve many.

How your company can scale is a question that requires more deliberate attention than simply deciding to sell more products, or to open new markets, or to make your small company a big company.

Learn from real examples…

“Scale is a bigger question for us than simply adding more servers because our software isn’t designed (unfortunately) to handle unlimited simultaneous clicks. It already struggles on certain days and times when too many people are on at once. We are being told that we need to start over and rebuild our software from scratch if we want to scale. The problem is we don’t have the money or time to do that and more people are trying to use the system every day; it sounds like a good problem to have but it is a two edged sword and the back edge of the sword is starting to harm our credibility in the market.”

“Our product is doing very well in Spain, but the same product is doing nothing in Latin America no matter how much money we invest into marketing. We aren’t sure why we can’t scale.”

“We are now realizing that our service struggles to scale because it needs a skilled and trained integrator to do the work one installation at a time. We are puzzling through what to do about it.”
