💥 Finally available! I have just read the full study we conducted about the Impact of Venture Clienting 2023. We celebrated the launch together with Anna Christmann, Digital Hub Initiative and many corporations from the Venture Clienting community. Wow - super excited about the possibilities we uncovered with a dataset of 66.424 corporate <> startup relationship datapoints. Big shoutout to Ismaël ZIGHED, Guilherme Gonçalves and Jasmin Weber. It was very exciting to imagine the possibilities for economic policy to support Venture Clienting. Some highlights: - How much revenue b2b startups make with corporations - What is the impact corporations realise - Insightful macro-economic perspectives On top I really enjoyed reading the expert articles of Brigitte Zypries & Sigmar Gabriel, Peter Borchers, Prof. Dr. Theresa Treffers, Alex von Frankenberg, Dietmar Harhoff, David Heller & Daehyun Kim from Max Planck, Philipp Willigmann, Teodora Georgieva (German Accelerator), Christian Hüttenhein and Tobias Gutmann, Lars Roessler, Ronja Stoffregen, Jens Hofmeister & Harsh Shah, Gleb Tritus, Philipp B. Pilat (PwC) and many more. Big and small working together - that is nothing new, is it? It has existed since the inception of the corporation in 1347. Why, then, are innovation professionals now coining terms like 'Venture Clienting,' 'Startup Partnering,' and 'Collaboration'? Why do we need to talk now about corporations and startups working together? The simple answer: because it is by collaborating with startups that corporations can afford the inevitable mistakes of innovation. We inevitably make mistakes when creating anything new. Corporations do not like mistakes; they are expensive. Startups, on the other hand, are designed to learn from mistakes effectively in terms of cost and time. With emerging challenges such as global warming, changing consumer expectations, and resource constraints - just to name a few - the demand for innovation (or change) in corporations is increasing. Small companies, or startups, offer this innovation. The number of startups founded each year is growing; last year, about 1.3 million new companies were founded, supported by $285 billion in venture capital. However, with millions of new startup products out there, how do corporations know which ones they need? The answer lies in a structured testing approach. This study sheds light on the best practices of corporations by adding the missing quantification of the phenomenon at scale, to inspire further academic research and economic policy. 🌍 Venture Clienting Visualized 💡 Ever wondered where giants like Unilever and L'Oréal find their startup tech? These maps unveils the intricate web of connections that power today's value-chains, showcasing the complexity of corporate <> startup relationships. But it's not just about pretty graphics. These 489 data points, extracted from case studies, reference customer sections, and press releases, offer a peek into a larger dataset of about 80k. It's a testament to the overlooked role of early b2b customers in the startup ecosystem. Why are we diving into this data? Because it's time to shine a spotlight on the silent influencers of innovation—the early customers. While investors often steal the limelight, it's these pioneers who shape the trajectory of startups. And yet, their impact remains elusive, trapped in individual anecdotes and stories. We're on a mission to change that. By quantifying the influence corporations wield in the startup realm, we're not just highlighting their role but also showcasing the benefits reaped. Our goal? To pave the way for economic policies that foster innovation, like subsidizing PoC budgets for qualified companies. So, what's the takeaway? Following the money trail of innovation funding paints a fascinating picture. While Venture Capital investments have soared past R&D budgets in recent years, startups are offering a compelling complement to in-house innovation. Imagine a startup that just raised a 30M Series A. They are 30 people and entirely focused on a single problem. It is hard for a unit inside a corporation to compete with that. But they can use the product and with that leverage the Venture Capital startups raise. The earlier customers engage with startups, the more sway they hold over product development (funded by VC)—a win-win for both parties. Take a look at these figures: Unilever: €0.9B R&D (2022) vs. €11.5B VC of startup partners L’Oréal: €1.2B R&D (2022) vs. €9.9B VC of startup partners While following very different dynamics, these numbers start to be in the same ballpark.
